Menthol is the main component of peppermint oil and is responsible for the noticeable cooling sensation.
Menthol provides a cooling sensation, used in a variety of consumer products ranging from confections such as chocolate and chewing gum to oral-care products such as toothpaste as well as in over-the-counter medicinal products for its cooling and biological effects.
Menthol generally has two isomers (D-type and L-type). Menthol can be used as a fragrance in toothpaste, perfumes, beverages, and candies. In medicine, it is used as a stimulant, acting on the skin or mucous membranes to provide a cooling and soothing effect. Internally, it can be used as a decongestant to treat headaches and nasal, pharyngeal, and laryngeal inflammation. Its esters can also be used as fragrances and medicines.
