Benzoic acid , C7H6O2 (or C6H5COOH), is a colorless crystalline solid and a simple aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time its only known source. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites. Salts of benzoic acid are used as food preservatives and benzoic acid is an important precursor for the industrial synthesis of many other organic substances. The salts and esters of benzoic acid are known as benzoates.

Used of Benzoic Acid
Benzoic acid has a variety of uses in different industries. Here are some of its common uses:
Food preservative: Benzoic acid and its salts (such as sodium benzoate) are commonly used as food preservatives to prevent microbial growth and extend the shelf life of food products.
Chemical intermediate: Benzoic acid is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of various chemicals, including benzoyl chloride, benzyl alcohol, and phenol.
Pharmaceutical ingredient: Benzoic acid is used as an ingredient in several pharmaceutical drugs, including cough syrups, antifungal creams, and pain relievers.
Personal care product ingredient: Benzoic acid is an ingredient in many personal care products, such as shampoos, soaps, and lotions, due to its antimicrobial properties.
Industrial applications: Benzoic acid is also used in various industrial applications, such as in the production of plastics, dyes, and insecticides.
Flavoring agent: Benzoic acid is used as a flavoring agent in certain foods and beverages, including soft drinks, fruit juices, and candies.
Animal feed additive: Benzoic acid and its salts are used as a feed additive in the animal industry to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi and improve the shelf life of feed.
Corrosion inhibitor: Benzoic acid is used as a corrosion inhibitor for metals, such as steel, in various industrial applications.
Laboratory reagent: Benzoic acid is used as a laboratory reagent for various chemical analyses, such as in the determination of the concentration of certain ions.
Herbicide: Benzoic acid derivatives, such as 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba), are commonly used as herbicides to control weeds in agriculture.
